Spring 2019 - Final Weekend

The final weekend of the 2019 Spring Season had everything - perfect weather, trophies, medals, awards, and some darn good softball.

The weekend started with Championship Night on Friday.  The opening contest featured the Bulldogs vs. the Menace in a AAA championship game that became an instant classic.  Featuring great pitching and slick fielding on both sides, the score was tied 3-3 after 6 innings.  In the top of the 7th inning, the Menace plated 4 runs to take a commanding lead.  Undaunted, the Bulldogs battled back, scoring 5 in the bottom of the 7th for the walkoff win in extra innings.

The Majors championship followed, with the Firecrackers hosting the Bomb Squad.  The Bomb Squad jumped out to an early 3-0 lead, only to see the Firecrackers knot the the score at 3-all.  After manufacturing another run, the Bomb Squad headed to the bottom of the 6th with a slim 1 run cushion.  Down to their final out, the Firecrackers loaded the bases, only to see their hopes of a comeback fall just short as the Bomb Squad made the 4-3 score hold up.

In between the games, the league handed out its annual awards.  First, the league recognized the three winners of this year's Rich Barone Scholarship program: Luka Holderied, Lizzie Kane, and Jayne Magliocco.  These former FLLGS standouts are the very best representation of the term "scholar-athlete," and we wish them all the success in the world as they head off to college next fall.  Next up was the presentation of the Dougiello Sportsmanship Awards.  One player in each division was recognized for exemplifying the qualities of consistent and sincere sportsmanship during the 2019 season. This year's winners were: Sydney Gilman (AA), Mareid Kelly (AAA), Lindsay Oberhand (Majors), and Calla Brown (Juniors).

And that was just Friday night!  On Saturday, Fairfield hosted the end-of-season Juniors tournament.  For many players (and coaches) it was the end of their little league career, so the day featured nearly as much nostalgia and reminiscing as softball action.  But they did play, and after 8 hours and 8 total games played across two fields, Los Azules defeated the Buckets in an all-Fairfield final.

On the other end of the age spectrum - and on the other side of town - our youngest players got to experience A-Ball and T-Ball day at the home of FLLGS, Dougiello Park.  Each team played 2 games, got their pictures taken, and feasted on their Dougiello Special (free hot dog, chips, water, and popsicle).  Nearly 150 players took the field, showing some amazing enthusiasm and talent.  Based on what these girls showed, it's safe to say the future of youth softball in Fairfield looks really strong.  (Note: if you have pictures of A-Ball and T-Ball day you'd like to share, please email them to info@fllgs.org).

Thank you to all of the remarkable managers and coaches who gave so much of their time to creating a great experience for the 340+ girls in FLLGS this spring.  And thank you to all the parents, who throughout the season serve as taxi, dry clearner, cheerleader, and a hundred other roles, all of which foster and support the girls' interest in softball.

AA Jamboree Champs

Keys to success? A 2:1 player/coach ratio

The AA jamboree was held Saturday on a terrific day for softball.  Finally teams needed to break out the sun block.  It was a day full of great pitching, fielding, hitting and most of all fun!

After 21 hard fought contests spanning 9 hours and 3 fields the Blue Devils ended up beating out the Barracudas for this year’s championship!!  Congratulations to all the players and coaches.
